Between December and May, gray whales migrate 10,000 miles along the Pacific Coast to the delight of residents and visitors. Since whaling was outlawed in 1972, the population of gray whales along the Pacific has been increasing. Calves are born in Baja California Lagoons, and after a few months travel back to the Bering Sea with their mothers. This year the 25th Annual Whale Festival is on March 3-4th in the town of Mendocino and March 17-18th in Fort Bragg. Activities include Wine Tasting, Chowder Tasting, Marine Wildlife show, Whale Run & Walk (10k-5k), Arts and Crafts Fair and the 2nd Annual Whales on Parade, which will not be real whales but whales decorated by local artists and the sold at silent auction. For more information contact the Mendocino Coast Chamber of Commerce at (707) 961-6300.
